Somatotopic Identification of Language-sma in Language Processing via Fmri

چکیده
This report describes a new finding regarding language-Supplementary Motor Area (SMA) in language processing using robust clinical protocols i.e. word generation (WG) and sentence generation (SG). This is a retrospective study on 7 patients referred for fMRI for preoperative language mapping. Subjects ranged in age from 20 40 years (28.8 ± 7.3), mean ± SD. We quantified the dimensions of language-SMA and motor-SMA and presented their mutual location somatotopically. Compared with SMA associated with motor (hand) function, coined M-SMA, the L-SMA is located anterior to M-SMA. It is estimated from the transverse images that the whole strip extends approx.18.75 mm in the sagittal plane, which is similar to that of M-SMA. Distance between L-SMA and M-SMA ranges from 9.8 to 19.8 mm. In conjunction with the commonly observed localization and lateralization of Broca’s and Wernicke’s areas, the identification of LSMA activation may help confirm the adequacy of the fMRI language mapping.

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to explore brain function: cortical representations of language critical areas
Pre-operative determination of the dominant hemisphere for speech and speech associated sensory and motor regions has been of great interest for the neurological surgeons. This dilemma has been of at most importance, but difficult to achieve, requiring either invasive (Wada test) or non-invasive methods (Brain Mapping). In the present study we have employed functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging...

Identifying spoken language automatically is to identify a language from the speech signal. Language identification systems can be divided into two categories, spectral-based methods and phonetic-based methods. In the former, short-time characteristics of speech spectrum are extracted as a multi-dimensional vector. The statistical model of these features is then obtained for each language. The ...

Introduction: about 20% to 30% of patients with epilepsy are diagnosed with drug-resistant epilepsy and one third of these are candidates for epilepsy surgery. Surgical resection of the epileptogenic tissue is a well-established method for treating patients with intractable focal epilepsy. Determining language laterality and locality is an important part of a comprehensive epilepsy program befo...

OBJECTIVE This study, which aimed to confirm or invalidate the somatotopic organization of the supplementary motor area (SMA), correlates the pattern of clinical symptoms observed after SMA removal with the extent of resection. METHODS Eleven patients with medial precentral glioma underwent partial or complete tumoral resection of the SMA. Seven patients underwent preoperative functional magn...
